CTV saves French authorities time and money with wireless port security
PORTE DE LA ROCHELLE, France--French systems integrator CTV has deployed a full wireless IP-based surveillance solution based around technology from Proxim Wireless Corporation, a specialist in core-to-client solutions for broadband wireless networks, at Port de La Rochelle, one of the largest commercial ports in Europe.

Authorities at the port, which receives more than 3,000 visits per day and counts 10,000 badge holders, initially looked into fiber-based solutions but found them too costly. Enter CTV, which proposed a wireless IP-based solution that was both less expensive and easier and quicker to install than the fiber option.

The system had to be able to provide video surveillance, personnel and vehicle access, control of shipping traffic and IP telephony, all in a completely secure manner. After surveying the site, CTV recommended Proxim Wireless equipment. To deliver the project, CTV implemented a wireless fiber ring using the Point-to-Point Proxim Tsunami QuickBridge.11 for the backhauling of the video surveillance cameras and access controls. The system connects all of the port entry points and provides redundancy in case of link failure. Besides providing wireless transmission from the cameras, the system can also remotely grant or prevent access to visiting vehicles.

The robust character of Proxim's equipment was key to its being selected for the project. "We believe that they are the only wireless products on the market that would be capable of withstanding such potentially hostile coastal conditions," CTV branch manager Jean Michel Maillet said in a statement. Proxim's equipment also delivers a "high performance to cost ratio," he said.

French authorities seem to agree. "We are extremely impressed by the wireless solution, which has operated without interruption in some adverse weather conditions," said Dominique Colson, port security officer at La Rochelle. "We're also really pleased that the wireless solution cost so much less than the fiber alternative we had envisaged."
