C-ways, Genetec upgrade city center security in UK
MANCHESTER, UK--IT integrator C-ways has tapped video surveillance software specialist Genetec to help the city of Manchester migrate its 700-camera analog city center surveillance system to an IP-based system.

City authorities opted for Genetec's Omnicast 4.1 platform to manage the new system in large part because of its new Federation feature. "Where before we could only use either unicast or multicast functions, the Federation will allow us to use both those functionalities simultaneously, offering better management of bandwidth," David Walsh, technical installations manager from the city of Manchester's command and control center, said in a statement.

With five control centers located across the city to manage video from their older fixed analog systems, the Federation has also given Manchester the ability to reroute all video back to one central monitoring station through IP.

As each system is migrated and rerouted back to the central monitoring station, there will no longer be a need for the other control centers, which will help to cut operating costs.

The system also offers complete flexibility in terms of being able to work with the existing infrastructure and any hardware providers selected by city authorities, something "very important when spending public money," said Walsh.
