Axis, Bosch, Sony to create forum for network video standard |

BIRMINGHAM, UK--Security industry heavyweights Axis, Bosch and Sony announced plans at the 2008 edition of IFSEC here Tuesday to establish an open forum aimed at developing a global standard for the interface of network video products.
There is currently no global standard defining how network video products like cameras, encoders and video management systems should communicate with each other, and the companies say that setting up an open forum to establish such a standard will give integrators increased flexibility and add momentum to the migration from analog to IP-based surveillance.
STORY CONTINUES BELOWAdvertisement The three companies envision a standard that comprises interfaces for specifications such as video streaming, device discovery and intelligence metadata, among others.
Representatives from Axis and Sony stressed that the initiative will result in a forum that is open in every respect to other industry players.
Once the framework for the standard is formalized, "others will be invited to join and extend the standard," said Sony's senior general manager for marketing, Matt Soga.
Describing the initiative as a way to "drive the market forward," and to "further support the shift from analog to digital," Axis' EMEA marketing director Dominic Bruning said that once the framework is announced and the doors of the forum opened, it would "be up to other companies to come forward and join."
The three companies expect to announce the framework of the standard and other details about the forum at this fall's security trade show in Essen, Germany.
