Sagem, Atos Origin win biometric passport order
PARIS--Systems integrator and biometrics specialist Sagem Securite and Atos Origin, an international information technology services group, have won a tender called by France's National Secure Credentials Agency (ANTS) to manage implementation and deployment of a new biometric passport system across France.

Under the terms of the deal, Sagem and Atos will deploy nearly 5,000 data acquisition and processing systems to 2,000 French town halls and 350 prefectures and sub-prefectures by June 2009, making it possible to include biometric fingerprints in new passports. The identity acquisition systems comply with ICAO standards, while system's ergonomic features make using the system easier for clients.

The contract reflects Sagem's ability to develop a "customized biometric identity solution within a very short timeframe," Sagem Securite's chairmand and CEO Jean-Paul Jainsky said in a statement. In addition to recognizing the company's leading role in managing identity credentials solutions, the contract win also supports Sagem's commitment to expanding in this market, said Jainsky.

The project will also involve the training of over 13,000 agents and the development and implementation of remote, paperless payment systems.

Sagem, which bills itself as the only integrator with proficiency in all the skills needed for an end-to-end identity system encompassing smart cards, terminals, encryption and biometrics, has delivered over 130 simple and multiple biometric identity systems and solutions to some 70 countries around the world.
