PARIS--French access control specialist Eden, a unit of the Easydentic Group, used Expo Protection, which took place here on Nov. 4 through 7, to launch a new biometric technology onto the European market based on vein patterns in human fingers.
Eden president Jean-Claude Bultel told Security Systems News Europe that the launch of its Biovein finger vein reader, which incorporates technology that originated in Japan via Hitachi's finger vein sensor, was nothing less than "a revolution in biometrics."
STORY CONTINUES BELOWAdvertisement France and other countries in Europe that have very strict laws governing the use and storage of fingerprints should be ripe markets for this new technology, according to Bultel. "Fingerprints are not secure in that they can be lifted or falsified or damaged," explained Bultel. This new technology, which images the interior vein patterns in a finger, is much more secure and has the added advantage of complying with privacy laws said Bultel. "The finger vein biometric can't be counterfeited, finger vein patterns can't be traced, and the technology guarantees the confidentiality of personal data," said Bultel. Flexible and adaptable, the only real requirement for the technology to work is that the user "cannot be dead," he added.
The Biovein reader can be used on a standalone basis, with programming and operation via the LCD screen built into the unit, or from any PC. It can also be easily integrated into a centralized access control network, according to Bultel.
Eden will work with its network of distributors and integrators across Europe to bring its new technology to market, said Bultel. Eden's parent company, the Easydentic Group, has operations in 13 countries across Europe, including the Benelux, UK, Spain, Italy, Germany and the Czech Republic.
